LEGAL
Last updated: March 15, 2026
By downloading, installing, accessing, or using ShieldKit ("the Software"), you ("User", "you", or "your") agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). These Terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you and the developer of ShieldKit ("Developer", "we", "us", or "our").
If you do not agree to all of these Terms, you must not download, install, or use the Software. Your continued use of the Software following the posting of changes to these Terms will be deemed your acceptance of those changes.
You must be at least 13 years of age to use the Software. If you are between 13 and 18 years of age (or the age of majority in your jurisdiction), you may only use the Software with the consent of a parent or legal guardian who agrees to be bound by these Terms. In the European Union, the minimum age may be up to 16 years depending on your member state's implementation of the GDPR.
By using the Software, you represent and warrant that you meet the eligibility requirements stated above and that you have the legal capacity to enter into these Terms.
ShieldKit is a macOS security application that provides malware detection and monitoring capabilities through four detection layers: hash matching, YARA rule scanning, behavioral analysis, and code signing verification. The Software also provides real-time file system monitoring, URL checking against local threat databases, and a quarantine system for isolating detected threats.
The Software operates entirely on your local machine. All scanning, detection, and analysis is performed locally without transmitting any data to external servers. See our Privacy Policy for complete details.
Subject to your compliance with these Terms, the Developer grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable license to download, install, and use the Software on macOS devices that you own or control, solely for your personal or internal business purposes.
Permitted uses:
Restrictions:
The Software, including but not limited to its code, design, user interface, graphics, icons, documentation, and all associated intellectual property rights, is and shall remain the exclusive property of the Developer. These Terms do not grant you any ownership interest in the Software, but only a limited license to use the Software as described herein.
"ShieldKit", the ShieldKit logo, and any associated trademarks, service marks, trade names, and trade dress are the property of the Developer. You may not use any of these marks without the prior written consent of the Developer, except as necessary to refer to the Software in a factual, non-misleading manner.
ShieldKit is provided free of charge. There are no subscription fees, in-app purchases, premium tiers, or hidden costs. The Software is fully functional without any payment. The Developer reserves the right to introduce paid features or versions in the future, but any currently free features will remain free for existing users.
ShieldKit requires access to your file system to perform its malware scanning and real-time monitoring functions. By installing and using the Software, you acknowledge and explicitly consent to the following:
All file operations are performed entirely on your local device. No file contents, names, paths, metadata, or any information derived from your files is ever transmitted off your Mac. You may revoke file system access at any time through macOS System Settings > Privacy & Security.
ShieldKit includes an automatic update mechanism powered by the Sparkle framework (MIT License). The Software may periodically check for updates by fetching a publicly hosted XML file (appcast) from GitHub. This is the only network connection the Software makes.
Updates may include bug fixes, security patches, new features, or changes to existing functionality. While updates are optional and require your confirmation before installation, we strongly recommend keeping the Software up to date to ensure you have the latest malware signature databases and security improvements.
You can disable automatic update checks in the application. The Developer reserves the right to modify, update, or discontinue the Software at any time without prior notice, although we will make reasonable efforts to communicate significant changes.
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND ACCURACY.
WITHOUT LIMITING THE FOREGOING, THE DEVELOPER MAKES NO WARRANTY THAT:
ShieldKit is a supplementary security tool and does not guarantee complete protection against all security threats. No malware detection software can provide 100% protection. You should not rely on ShieldKit as your sole security measure. The Developer recommends using ShieldKit in conjunction with macOS built-in security features (XProtect, Gatekeeper, FileVault) and safe computing practices.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL THE DEVELOPER, ITS AFFILIATES, LICENSORS, OR SERVICE PROVIDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
THE DEVELOPER'S TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY UNDER THESE TERMS SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR THE SOFTWARE (WHICH IS ZERO, AS SHIELDKIT IS FREE) OR (B) FIFTY U.S. DOLLARS ($50.00).
THE FOREGOING LIMITATIONS SHALL APPLY REGARDLESS OF THE FORM OF ACTION, WHETHER IN CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), STRICT LIABILITY, OR OTHERWISE, EVEN IF THE DEVELOPER HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain damages. In such jurisdictions, the Developer's liability shall be limited to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law.
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Developer and its affiliates, officers, directors, employees, agents, and licensors from and against any and all claims, damages, obligations, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from or related to:
ShieldKit incorporates the following third-party open-source components. Use of these components is subject to their respective licenses:
The inclusion of third-party components does not imply endorsement by or affiliation with the respective projects. The Developer is not responsible for the functionality, security, or maintenance of third-party components, although we make reasonable efforts to keep them updated.
These Terms are effective until terminated. Your rights under these Terms will terminate automatically and without notice if you fail to comply with any provision of these Terms.
The Developer may also terminate or suspend your right to use the Software at any time, for any reason or no reason, with or without notice.
Upon termination:
Termination of these Terms does not affect any locally stored data on your device. You may retain or delete your scan history, quarantined files, and preferences at your discretion.
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, United States of America, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. You agree that any legal action or proceeding arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Software shall be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in California, and you hereby consent to the personal jurisdiction and venue of such courts.
Before initiating any formal legal proceedings, you agree to first attempt to resolve any dispute, claim, or controversy arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Software ("Dispute") informally by contacting the Developer at the email address below. The parties shall use good faith efforts to resolve the Dispute within thirty (30) days of the initial notice.
If the Dispute cannot be resolved informally within 30 days, either party may pursue formal legal remedies as provided in Section 14.
If any provision of these Terms is held to be invalid, illegal, or unenforceable by a court of competent jurisdiction, the invalidity of that provision shall not affect the validity or enforceability of the remaining provisions of these Terms. The invalid provision shall be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it valid and enforceable while preserving the original intent of the parties.
These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and the Developer regarding the Software and supersede all prior and contemporaneous understandings, agreements, representations, and warranties, both written and oral, regarding the Software.
The failure of the Developer to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. Any waiver of any provision of these Terms will be effective only if in writing and signed by the Developer.
You may not assign or transfer these Terms, or any rights or obligations hereunder, without the prior written consent of the Developer. The Developer may assign these Terms without restriction. These Terms are binding upon and shall inure to the benefit of the parties and their respective successors and permitted assigns.
The Developer shall not be liable for any failure or delay in performance resulting from causes beyond its reasonable control, including but not limited to acts of God, natural disasters, pandemic, war, terrorism, government actions, power failures, internet disruptions, or other force majeure events.
You agree to comply with all applicable export and re-export control laws and regulations, including the Export Administration Regulations maintained by the U.S. Department of Commerce, trade and economic sanctions maintained by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations maintained by the U.S. Department of State. You represent and warrant that you are not located in, or a resident or national of, any country subject to a U.S. government embargo, and that you are not on any U.S. government restricted parties list.
We reserve the right to modify, amend, or replace these Terms at any time at our sole discretion. If we make material changes to these Terms, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and may provide additional notice through the Software or our website.
Your continued use of the Software after any changes to these Terms constitutes your acceptance of the modified Terms. If you do not agree to the modified Terms, you must discontinue use of the Software.
We encourage you to review these Terms periodically for any changes. Changes to these Terms are effective when they are posted on this page.
